A Tracking Problem?<\/h2>\n<p>Verify if your site is suffering from a real general traffic loss happening to\u00a0all of your channels and pages, or specific one per area or device caused by configuration issues by checking the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Has your site been Offline?\u00a0<\/strong>Verify if your site is (and has been) online and correctly working, or if it might have been down due to technical issues. You can be alerted when this happens by using an \u201cuptime service\u201d such as:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pingdom.com\/product\/uptime-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pingdom Uptime Monitoring<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uptimerobot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UptimeRobot<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/littlewarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Warden<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you have analytics tracking issues?\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/1008083?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Analytics Web tracking setup<\/a> is correct for which you can verify if you have lost the traffic from all the sources or it is only happening to organic, as well as if this is something affecting all of your site\u2019s pages or only certain areas. A Search Behavior Change?<\/h2>\n<p>Verify if there has been a change in users search behavior due to seasonality or even change of preferences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Compare your current traffic trend with the ones of previous years:\u00a0<\/strong>Use your Web Analytics, to see if they coincide. A Search Results Page Change?<\/h2>\n<p>See if there has been a change in the way your pages -or the ones of your competitors- are displayed in search results for the queries you have been ranking, impacting their visibility and CTR.<\/p>\n<p>The goal should be to check if your site pages CTR in search results has decreased because of a change in their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/learn\/seo\/serp-features\">SERP features<\/a>, rich results, direct answers, or inclusions in top stories carrousel due to an AMP implementation, the knowledge graph, maps, images or videos results, or even number of ads displayed in the SERPs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use your own Google Search Console CTR vs. Impressions data from the Performance report:\u00a0<\/strong>Look for drops in Google Search Console \u201cSearch Analytics\u201d (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7576553?hl=en\">Performance<\/a>\u201c) CTR vs. Impressions trend over time for your top queries and pages per search type (Web, image, video), as well as the rich results metrics and AMP metrics under the \u201csearch appearance\u201d and enhancements reports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check keywords tools SERP Features for your domain vs. the competition:\u00a0<\/strong>Checking your site SERP visibility metrics in\u00a0<a class=\"amp-wp-16472dc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/news\/position-tracking-serp-features-support\/\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">SEMrush SERP features<\/a><span class=\"amp-wp-16472dc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"amp-wp-16472dc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sistrix.com\/changelog\/snippet-preview-serp-features-rapid-access\/\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Sistrix SERP features<\/a><span class=\"amp-wp-16472dc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">, and compare them with the ones of your competition, in case they have been the ones increasing their visibility, impacting your site pages CTR negatively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before worrying over a potential rankings loss, verify first if the negative traffic trend is due to a lower CTR caused by a change in the way your pages are displayed in search results and\/or their visibility vs. others sites or ads.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a04. A Real Drop in Organic Search Rankings?<\/h2>\n<p>If it hasn\u2019t been a tracking issue, a change in user search behavior or SERP features change, it\u2019s then time to check if the organic traffic drop is due to a real negative change in rankings and if so, where and how is affecting your site by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check your rankings:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Verifying your rankings per query, pages, in each device and search type with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/35252?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Search Console \u201cSearch Analytics\u201d (\u201cPerformance\u201d) section<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.semrush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SEMrush<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchmetrics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SearchMetrics<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sistrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sistrix Visibility<\/a>\u00a0in case you don\u2019t specifically monitor your rankings with tools like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seomonitor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SEOmonitor<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/getstat.com\/\">STAT<\/a>\u00a0(which is also recommended to do) to identify which are the specific areas, pages types and queries affected by the loss in case it hasn\u2019t been something affecting the whole site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compare with your competitors rankings:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Comparing your rankings vs. the ones of your competitors to identify if they have also lost them too, and see which of them have increased in rankings while you have decreased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you can identify a real drop in rankings, whether in certain pages or the overall site that also correlates in the dates of your traffic loss, then you should identify its causes in order to fix the issues.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a05. A Content Crawlability Issue?<\/h2>\n<p>Have you changed your site Web structure, migrated towards HTTPS or another domain without following SEO best practices accordingly,\u00a0or moved to a new CDN or hosting without checking that their configuration allowed search bots access, and now Google can\u2019t reach your pages? You can be alerted of technical configurations that can cause crawlability issues with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/littlewarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Warden<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contentkingapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ContentKing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Verify if the loss of organic traffic and rankings are due to Web crawlability challenges by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Checking your Google Search Console Index Coverage and Crawl Errors and Stats:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Revise your Crawl Errors and Stats from the old version and to the new Google Search Console \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7440203?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Index Coverage<\/a>\u201d report, to find potential crawling errors affecting those pages for which you have identified a rankings and traffic drop. If you find them there, check which type of error it is: Server errors (5xx), unauthorized requests (401), not found (404), blocked by robots.txt, redirect errors, soft 404s, among others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using the \u201cFetch as Google\u201d feature in the Google Search Console:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Validate that the crawlability issues are still happening with Google Search Console\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6066467?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fetch as Google<\/a>\u201d and selecting the \u201cFetch and Render\u201d functionality, with both the desktop and smartphone bots to verify that they are correctly accessible, and alternatively verify the configuration of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6062598?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=6061961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robots.txt,<\/a>\u00a0for which you can use Google Search Console\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/robots-testing-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robots Testing Tool,<\/a>\u00a0if a Robots.txt blockage was specified as the cause of the crawlability issue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simulating a crawl with SEO Crawlers:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Verify yourself that you\u2019re blocking the Googlebot, by crawling the site simulating the mobile as well as desktop ones with SEO crawlers like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/seo-spider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ScreamingFrog<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepcrawl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deepcrawl<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Botify<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sitebulb.com\/\">Sitebulb<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.ryte.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryte<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oncrawl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OnCrawl<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Revising your own Web server logs:<br \/>\n<\/strong>If the results are not yet clear:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/aleydasolis\/discovering-seo-opportunities-through-log-analysis-dtdconf\">Check your Web server logs<\/a>\u00a0to look for crawling issues and identify if there\u2019s a correlation with the drop times, areas and devices and\/or gaps with your own crawling and traffic, by using tools like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/log-file-analyser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Screaming Frog Log Analyzer<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seolyzer.io\/\">SEOlyzer<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.botify.com\/log-analyzer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Botify Log Analyzer<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oncrawl.com\/seo-log-analyzer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OnCrawl<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/7-fundamental-technical-seo-questions-to-answer-with-a-log-analysis-and-how-to-easily-do-it-245903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loggly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have changed your URL structure and verified that are suffering from crawlability issues, check out these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/aleydasolis\/the-seo-guide-for-successful-web-migrations-eusearchcon\">Web migration\u2019s SEO best practices<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/recovering-your-organic-search-traffic-from-a-web-migration-gone-wrong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steps to follow if you haven\u2019t done a Web migration well to recover your traffic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After fixing and verified that the issues are gone, remember to use the \u201cValidate Fix\u201d option from the new Google Search Console \u201cIndex Coverage\u201d report for the affected pages, which will recrawl to see if they are now correctly accessible and indexable.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a06. A content indexing issue?<\/h2>\n<p>Have you non-indexed your pages by mistake or changed your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofdigital.com\/javascript-seo-the-definitive-resource-list\/\">content implementation relying on Javascript<\/a>? You can be alerted of technical configurations that can cause indexing issues with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/littlewarden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Warden<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contentkingapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ContentKing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See\u00a0if\u00a0Google is not correctly indexing the content of the pages affected by traffic &amp; rankings loss by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verifying if there has been\u00a0a decrease in your site number of indexed URLs with Google Search Console \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7440203?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Index Coverage<\/a>\u201d report and the specified reason for leaving them out of the index.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If your pages are shown in Google Search Console as not indexed:\u00a0<\/strong>Use the Google Search Console Index Coverage as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/9012289?hl=en\">Google inspection tool<\/a>\u00a0to validate the specific reason of why the affected pages URLs have been excluded of the index:\u00a0if the pages have been noindexed, if there\u2019s an alternate page selected as canonical, if Google chose another URL as canonical different to the one specified, etc. due to an overlooked configuration issue that you can change.Do a manual check yourself by crawling your site with an SEO crawler too to verify all the affected pages with indexing issues and their specific meta robots and canonicalization configuration, that confirms what is shown through Google Search Console.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If your pages are shown in Google Search Console to be indexed:\u00a0<\/strong>Check if your content relies on JavaScript that might not be correctly indexed by Google by disabling the JavaScript from your browser -you can use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/web-developer\/bfbameneiokkgbdmiekhjnmfkcnldhhm\">Web Developer Chrome Extension to easily do this<\/a>\u2013 and verify if your pages content is still correctly shown, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polemicdigital.com\/view-source-quickly-compare-raw-html-rendered-dom\/\">compare the one shown in the HTML and the Google cache<\/a>\u00a0(use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/2466433?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201csite:\u201d search operator<\/a>\u00a0to look for them) versus the one shown\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/chromes-devtools-seo-10-ways-use-seo-audits-266433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the DOM<\/a>\u00a0(by using Chrome DevTools) and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\">Google\u2019s Mobile Friendly Test<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/rich-results\">Google\u2019s Rich Results test<\/a>\u00a0tools that shows the rendered HTML for mobile and desktop respectively. Some SEO crawlers already allows to easily verify this like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screamingfrog.co.uk\/crawl-javascript-seo\/\">ScreamingFrog<\/a>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sitebulb.com\/resources\/guides\/how-to-crawl-javascript-websites\/\">Sitebulb<\/a>\u00a0too. A Google Search Console misconfiguration?<\/h2>\n<p>Check if you haven\u2019t changed your Google Search Console settings\u00a0as there are features that if misconfigured could negatively affect your existing organic search visibility, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Setting an incorrect\u00a0preference for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/6080550?hl=en\">URLs parameters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/2648487?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disavowing<\/a>\u00a0a high volume of popular backlinks.<\/li>\n<li>Setting an incorrect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/62399?hl=en\">International Country Targeting<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\u00a08. A Web security problem?<\/h2>\n<p>Verify if Google has detected any security problem (due to malware or spam) by checking\u00a0the Google Search Console \u201cSecurity Issues\u201d area. If so, you should follow the process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en\/webmasters\/hacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specified here<\/a>\u00a0to fix the issues and request\u00a0for a review.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a09. A manual penalty?<\/h2>\n<p>If the traffic loss coincides with a rankings drop but you can\u2019t find any new crawlability or indexing issues affecting your site: Check if your site has been manually penalized by not following\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/35769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google\u2019s Webmaster Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0-the reasons can go from having unnatural incoming links, keyword stuffing to cloaking- \u00a0by checking if you have received a message warning about it in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/2604824?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">manual actions<\/a>\u201d section of Google Search Console.<\/p>\n<p>If so, action type, reasons and areas of the site affected will be provided there\u00a0and you\u2019ll need to take the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/ultimate-guide-to-google-penalty-removal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appropriate<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginewatch.com\/2014\/02\/10\/google-unnatural-links-manual-penalty-a-recovery-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clean-up<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/sew\/how-to\/2276498\/pure-spam-what-are-google-penalties-what-to-do-to-recover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">optimization<\/a>\u00a0steps\u00a0before asking for a reinclusion review.
